Will a Kydex Holster Scratch

When people are used to something they think is soft and supple, they question weather a Kydex or Boltaron Holster will work for them.  What people fail to realize is that there are many makers of Kydex Holsters out there and various levels of quality.  A proper made Kydex Holster like the ones we manufacture at MK-Tek Holsters are designed to provide clearance around the frames and slide / cylinders of your handgun.  We engineer the retention to be aligned with the Trigger Guard.  All retention happens off of the Trigger Guard or if there is a light or laser it is based on the light or laser.  Retention is a Level One retention.  Meaning that there is one level of safeguard you must overcome to pull the handgun out of the holster.

Leather of Nylon type holsters are always a Friction Fit only type holster.  They achieve there retention but enclosing the complete slide and frame in a tight fitting case.  This produces 100 percent friction against your slide and frame every time you insert or draw the handgun from the holster. With age and use that friction becomes like sandpaper as the holster absorbs moisture and oils from your body and firearm  The dirt and dust stay embedded into the fabric of the leather and nylon, adding more abrasion.  Over time a leather holster will be come more pliable and soft loosing shape and the ability to hold the firearm in place.  A properly care for and maintained Kydex Holster will keep the shape for years.

The inside of a properly made Kydex Holster will have a smooth finish on the inside that will aid in a smooth draw.  A repeatable retention feeling.  It does not loosen over time.  The material is designed for durability.

To say there is no wear and tear on a handgun put into a good Kydex or Boltaron Holster would be misleading.  There is always going to be some cases of wear on the Trigger Guard area.  Potentially on your slide if you are the type of person who pokes and jabs this firearm back into the holster and hits the mouth of the holster repeatably over time.  A smooth draw and a smooth and safe re-holstering are always recommended.

To help reduce friction we always use a Silicone spray on the inside of our holsters.  You should too.
